Earl Stafford, Music Director/Principal Conductor

A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Earl Stafford began his music training at the age of eight. He made his piano solo debut two years later with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Earl continued his studies at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, in New York with Milton Kaye, and at the Paris Conservatoire with Aldo Ciccolini and Franco Ferrara.

Since joining the RWB, Earl has performed around the world, receiving critical accolades for his performances. The Globe and Mail said "his pianistic artistry was sheer poetry". Since winning the gold medal for best pianist at 1980 International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, Earl has been working with Evelyn Hart.

Earl was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor for the RWB in 1984. In addition to his work with the RWB he has served on the faculty of the Banff Centre, School for the Arts, been Music Director for Rainbow Stage, and is currently enjoying a very active career as guest conductor with many of Canada's orchestras. Internationally, Earl has appeared with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, Theatre Harmony Orchestra of Moscow and the National Orchestra of Peru.

In 1997, Earl made his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and also worked with Mel Torme and the Winnipeg Symphony.
