Born in Penticton, British Columbia, Jennifer Welsman began training at the Penticton School of Dance. In 1993, she joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Professional Division, graduating with distinction in 1998. Just prior to graduation, she was awarded the prestigious Prince Edward Award and was flown to England to receive the award from the Prince himself. Welsman was invited to join the RWB immediately following graduation for the 1998/99 season and was promoted to second soloist in 2002.
Welsman’s repertoire includes the leading roles in Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. She has also performed featured roles in Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Allegro Brillante, Serenade, Concerto Barocco, Dracula, Miroirs, Symphony in D, Butterfly, Carmina Burana, Le Jazz Hot and Rodeo. She has had roles created for her in Mark Godden’s The Magic Flute, Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story and Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmen, The Passion.
When not dancing with the RWB, Welsman has been invited to appear as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Sundays with the Family’ concert series. She also plays the roll of ‘China Doll’ on the Gemini award winning children’s television program The Toy Castle.
