On October 13th and 14th, the RWBS was pleased to present contemporary guest teacher, Stephanie Rutherford to our Intermediate and Senior Jazz Dance Ensembles. Ms Rutherford, a native of Winnipeg, creates contemporary jazz work within the Toronto dance scene and is a resident teacher for Metro Movement Dance Studio in Toronto. The students enjoyed her challenging classes and were shown a new style of dance.
Every year the RWBS chooses a couple dance conventions to promote to our students in an effort to expose them to other teachers and styles of dance and choreography. It is necessary to attend these sorts of conventions, for any student who wishes to excel at dance and be the best dancer they can be. They also provide the opportunity for the students to meet other dancers and make connections in the dance world.
Both 5678 Showtime and IDance, are weekend events which provide the students with about 4-5 dance classes per day. 5678 Showtime also sports a competition over the course of their event, that our Jazz and Tap Dance Ensembles will be competing at. These extra performance opportunities are also important for the overall growth of the dancers in these disciplines.
These conventions are open to the majority of the levels within the school. Should you wish to register your child for these unique opportunities, all registrations must be done through the School Office, no later than December 5th. All Jazz and Tap Dance Ensemble students will receive detailed information in their Festival package regarding these conventions; however ALL RWBS students are invited to attend as outlined below.
Convention $122.00/per student – This convention is open to all students in Level 3 Jazz and up
$225/student age 13 and up as of February 5th
This convention is open to Level 6A jazz and up as well as Intermediate Dance Ensemble.
The Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival offers a category referred to as “student initiated choreography”. This category allows students to choreograph their own dances as well as choose their own performers and costuming. Adjudication is based purely on the structure of the choreography and interpretation by the choreographer. The festival itself takes place in mid May at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
The cost to participate is $135. This fee will include the use of our studios for rehearsals, staff support, costume guidance, RWBS staff accompaniment at the festival and the festival entry fee. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please pick up further information at the School Office.
A limited number of applications will be accepted. Applications will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis and will be accepted until November 12th.
