Guest Dancer (Former RWB Principal Dancer)
Reyneris Reyes began his dance training at the Vocational School of Art in Pinar de Rio, Cuba and continued at the National Ballet School in Havana. He joined the National Ballet of Cuba in 1993 as a member of the corps de ballet, was promoted to first soloist in 1996 and principal dancer in 1998. Among the major roles he performed in Cuba were Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Albrecht in Giselle, and Basilio in Don Quixote.
Reyes first joined Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1999 as a soloist and was promoted to principal dancer in 2002. His repertory in Winnipeg included George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana, Albrecht in Sir Peter Wright’s Giselle, and Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty. Most recently, Reyes returned to the RWB as a guest artist in the 2008/09 season and danced the lead role of Romeo in Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo & Juliet.
With the Boston Ballet, Reyes performed the roles of Prince Florimund and Bluebird in Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty, Petruchio in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew, Hilarion and Peasant pas de deux in Maina Gielgud’s Giselle, Gurn in August Bournonville’s La Sylphide and Colas in Sir Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée. He has also danced in William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, James Kudelka’s Cinderella, Lucinda Childs’ Ten Part Suite, Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena, Jorma Elo’s In On Blue and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room. Reyes has toured extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America. He is the recipient of the Cuban National Arts Medal, the highest artistic honour in Cuba.
Reyes returned to the RWB for the 2009/10 season as principal dancer performing leads roles in Jorden Morris’ Moulin Rouge – The Ballet as Matthew, in Nutcracker as Edouard, in Swan Lake as Prince Siegfried and in Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story as Bob.
Just recently, Reyes has stepped-down as an RWB Company dancer, relocating to the US with his family. He will, however, be returning to the RWB next season as a guest dancer for the 2010/2011 season.
