Director of Finance

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet is currently seeking a Director of Finance to join our team.

Position Scope:

 

The Director of Finance contributes to the overall success of the organization by effectively managing all financial tasks for the organization. In addition, Director of Finance will be relied upon to assist and advise the Executive Director on the financial health of the organization, and provide recommendations that support continuous improvement and growth.  

 

As a member of the Senior Management Team, the incumbent must be able to lead a team of peers with varying levels of financial knowledge in terms of improved and efficient processes. 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Financial accounting and reporting

  • Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Responsible for financial accounting as well as preparation and analysis of financial reports;
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures;
  • Oversee payroll preparation and administration;
  • Evaluate requirement for and recommend appropriate technology for organization’s information; requirements and financial data processing, control and reporting;
  • Lead the development of long/short term budgets, forecasting & project management accounting;
  • Coach, mentor and develop a highly effective financial team;
  • Liaise with external auditors;
  • Ensure all statutory requirements are properly met such as Charitable Status and taxes;
  • As a member of the Senior Management Team, strategize on opportunities for income generation; and
  • Oversee management of leases, contracts, insurance and other financial commitments.

Payroll preparation and administration

  • Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner
  • Negotiate and manage the employee insurance and benefits plans
  • Process and submit statutory and benefits remittances on time
  • Issue annual T4s and T4As

Budget preparation

  • Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation, and prepare the annual budget in consultation with the Executive Director and Treasurer and/or Finance Committee
  • Assist Program Directors and Project Managers with the preparation of budgets for funding applications

Project Management Accounting

  • Maintain financial records for each project in a manner that facilitates management reports
  • Ensure that accurate and timely financial statements are prepared in accordance with contract agreements with funders
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual projects

Information Technology

  • Evaluate the need for new technology to meet the organization's financial data processing, control, and reporting requirements
  • Advise on appropriate technology that meets the organization's information requirements and financial resources

Risk Management

  • Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized
  • Advise the organization's leadership on appropriate insurance coverage for the organization and the Board of Directors
  • Maximize income where possible and appropriate
  • Negotiate with Bank for lines of credit or other financial services as required and appropriate

 

Working Conditions:

The Director of Finance works in an office environment, and usually works a standard work week, however may be required to work some overtime hours to attend Board meetings, and during specific periods of the accounting cycle such as the Annual Audit. As the Director of Finance and the incumbent will spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, which can cause muscle strain. The office environment is busy with constant interruptions and must meet with others within the organization on a regular basis. This position requires long hours in intense concentration on the computer conducting financial analysis and preparing detailed reports which requires attention to detail and a high level of accuracy. The Director of Finance and Administration must meet several deadlines and will have to manage a number of requests at one time. Stress may be caused by the need to complete tasks within tight deadlines.

 

Selection Criteria

  • Post-secondary education in finance, commerce, business, and/or related discipline;
  • Financial designation (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA) highly desired
  • 3 – 5 years of progressive financial responsibility
  • Proficient knowledge of:  GAAP, accounting programs, A/P, A/R, Fund Accounting, preparation of financial statements and reports, administration of employee benefits, payroll system & reporting, office administration, HRIS and relevant Canadian Federal and Provincial legislation especially pertaining to charities.
  • Experience managing staff.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive financial responsibility
