RWB celebrates milestone anniversary with free performances for all to attend

Winnipeg, MB (July 2, 2014) - Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet launches its 75th Anniversary season from July 23-25 with Ballet in the Park. The free family-friendly event returns to Assiniboine Park for three outdoor performances on the Lyric Theatre stage at 7:30 pm nightly. Presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, Ballet in the Park has been an annual Winnipeg tradition since the early 1970’s, attracting more than 20,000 people annually from Winnipeg and beyond.

The 2014 Ballet in the Park program features a diverse mix of RWB Company and RWB School performances. Having recently enjoyed an outstanding reaction from Winnipeg audiences in its RWB premiere in March 2014, James Kudelka’s “modern masterpiece”, The Four Seasons returns to the stage. Danced to Antonio Vivaldi’s four violin concertos, The Four Seasons beautifully demonstrates Kudelka’s extraordinary ability to pair music and movement.

“I always look forward to Ballet in the Park as it is a great way to introduce Winnipeg families to the art of ballet,” said André Lewis, Artistic Director of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. “It’s wonderful for everyone in Winnipeg to have the opportunity to attend the opening of our 75th Anniversary season.”

Ballet in the Park also gives audiences a glimpse into the exquisite masterpiece Swan Lake as talented students from the RWB School Professional Division present excerpts of the well-known classic including the Pas de Trois, Mazurka and the iconic Danse des Petits Cygnes. For those who enjoy the Swan Lakeexcerpts presented in July, Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa’s full length masterpiece will return to the Centennial Concert Hall for the RWB Company’s 75th Anniversary Season in March 2015.

Audience members will also be treated to a hip hop performance by RWB School Recreational Division students featuring choreography by local talent, Eugene Baffoe. Audience members who want to learn a little more about ballet can look forward to a lecture demonstration featuring a lucky audience member, led by RWB School Director Arlene Minkhorst.

“Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is proud to support the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as the Presenting Sponsor of Ballet in the Park,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Chief Community Relations & Marketing Officer Larry Wandowich. “This annual tradition brings our community together to celebrate summer and enjoy the world class talent that the Royal Winnipeg Ballet brings to the Lyric Stage each year.”

Ballet in the Park is made possible through the generous support of Presenting Sponsor Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet is also proud to acknowledge the support of Canadian Heritage, the Manitoba Arts Council, and Pattison Outdoor Advertising.
