Holiday Roundup

The holidays are almost upon us and we’re feeling the spirit of the season here at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The RWB School Recreational Division is excited to be a part of a number of community events surrounding the holidays and leading up the RWB’s production of Nutcracker!

On Friday, November 14, students Rachael Buchwald and Ronan Sheikh dressed up in their Nutcracker best and attended the Children’s Museum’s November Membership Night alongside Filbert the Bear, the Nutcracker mascot. The dancers and Filbert met Children’s Museum members and their guests.

Students Kaily Price and Luke Boguski dressed up in their Nutcracker wear and headed to the Festival of Trees and Lights Family Day on Saturday, November 22 in the Manitoba Hydro building. The dancers and Filbert joined Santa and Mrs. Claus in greeting families and sharing hot cocoa and cookies.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s holiday party takes place on Sunday, December 7 from 1:30 to 4pm. The free event, open to the public, will feature special holiday music, games, hot cocoa and cookies. RWB School Recreational Division students Rachel Buchwald and Ronan Sheikh will join the WAG elves and Santa in trimming the WAG’s holiday tree!

Students Meghan Carnegie and Luke Boguski, along with Filbert, will attend Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s Brunch with Santa at the Qualico Family Centre on Sunday, December 14. The event, which runs from 11am to 1pm, is open to the public, however if you wish to attend reservations are recommended as it fills up quickly! Visit assiniboinepark.ca for more information.

Everyone’s favourite holiday classic, Nutcracker, runs December 20 to 28 at the Centennial Concert Hall. The RWB School will have more than 50 Recreational Division students performing alongside the RWB Company and Professional Division students for what has become a holiday tradition for so many. This year’s Nutcracker has an exciting new addition! Thirteen polar bears – one big and twelve babies – will be added to the Nutcracker cast of characters.

The RWB School will be holding a food drive for Winnipeg Harvest, running November 15 to December 15. RWB School Recreational Division students and families are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the Harvest Bin. Upon donating, please show your item to the School Office Staff before placing it in the bin and you will be given a ballot to enter to win a pair of tickets to Nutcracker. Help us fill the bin!

“The holiday season is a perfect time to celebrate one’s good fortune and to give back to the community,” said Kelly Bale, Principal of the Recreational Division. “It’s a delight that our Recreational Division students and families are eager to make a difference in the lives of so many by donating food to the Winnipeg Harvest and by sharing their love for dance through the many celebratory events leading up to Nutcracker.”

Stay tuned to rwb.org, Facebook and Twitter for more details about holiday season events.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division Auditions

Each year, the RWB School sends a team of artistic faculty and staff to cities across Canada and the United States to audition students for its Ballet Academic, Aspirant and Teacher Training Programs. The 2014-2015 International Audition Tour kicked off in Winnipeg in October, and wraps up with a second Winnipeg date on Sunday, January 25, 2015.

An annual Recreational Division Scholarship for the Summer Session is awarded to one RD student who attends a Winnipeg audition. If you are interested in auditioning or participating in the Master Classes/Workshops offered, please contact the School Office or download the registration form at www.rwbschool.com. The audition is a very positive learning experience for all students, and we encourage students to attend the workshops to gain new perspectives from Professional Division teachers. Details regarding a RD specific parent information session will be available in the New Year.

Movers and Shakers II Registration

The first session of the Movers and Shakers program (3-year-old creative movement) will be coming to an end as of Sunday, December 21. The second session will begin on Sunday, January 4. Movers and Shakers II will not involve parent participation; however parents will be invited to view their child’s class during the March Observation Week. All registrations are currently being accepted through the School Office. Current Movers and Shakers students are welcome to register for the second session if they did not do so when they initially registered.

Cecchetti Ballet Workshop

The Manitoba Branch of the Cecchetti Society of Canada will be presenting a workshop over the weekend of January 17-18, 2015. Unset ballet classes will be available for RWB Levels 1 and up. Syllabus classes will be available at the Majors levels.

Conducting ballet classes throughout the weekend will be Cecchetti Society of Canada examiners, Jane Wooding of Ontario, and Margaret Dalwood of Edmonton.

The Manitoba committee is proud to offer supplementary classes for students throughout the weekend. Improvisation classes will be available for RWB Levels 1-6 taught by Claire Marshall. A Variations class for Majors students will be taught by RWB Company dancer, Yayoi Ban.

Students wishing to register for the Cecchetti Workshops can do so through the RWB School Office by January 10, 2015.

RWB School Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive

Win a pair of Nutcracker tickets! From November 15 – December 15, the RWB School will be running a contest for donations to Winnipeg Harvest. Help us fill the bin!

Dance Manitoba Showcase

On Sunday, November 23 the RWB School performed at Dance Manitoba’s annual Members’ Showcase. This event is dedicated to the promotion of dance and dance education in Manitoba. The Showcase Concert provides an opportunity for dancers to experience performing on stage in a professional environment and for Manitobans to sample the range and diversity of dance talent in the province. The variety of dance disciplines represented at the Showcase Concert include jazz, modern, tap, ballet, hip hop, belly dance and musical theatre. The RWB School performed two pieces at this years’ showcase, Soleil Kunzig, Anna Radawetz and Katie Welham performed “Plink, Plank, Plunk!” choreographed by Suzanne Andre, along with Anthony Ferens and Alenna Mark who performed “A Stud and A Babe” choreographed by Paula Potosky.

Triple Threat Dance Convention

On November 8-9 several RWB students attended the Triple Threat Dance Convention at the RBC Convention Centre. Students had the opportunity to work with several talented Convention teachers, including Megan Lawson, Devon Perri, Nicholas Young and Tina Landon.

Additionally, Intermediate and Senior students had the exciting opportunity to learn the choreography from Janet Jacksons “IF” video, directly from choreographer Tina Landon and dancer Kelly Kono.

Requests for Audition Support Material

The RWB School is kindly asking that parents of RWB Recreational Division students who are interested in auditioning for specific performance opportunities, summer schools or workshops in the city or abroad, inform their child’s dance teacher or the Principal. The RWB School endeavours to support students through these audition processes, and ensuring teachers and the Principal are aware of participation helps us to do so. Please note, if students or parents are requesting support from the RWB School by means of video auditions or letters of recommendation, they must pick up an application form at the School Office and hand it in by December 18.
