Cecchetti Ballet Workshop

The Manitoba Branch of the Cecchetti Society of Canada will be presenting a workshop over the weekend of January 17-18, 2015. Unset ballet classes will be available for RWB School Levels 1 and up. Syllabus classes will be available at the Majors levels.

Conducting ballet classes throughout the weekend will be Cecchetti Society of Canada examiners, Mary Ross of Ontario, and Margaret Dalwood of Edmonton.

The Manitoba committee is proud to offer supplementary classes for students throughout the weekend. Improvisation classes will be available for RWB School Levels 1-6 taught by Claire Marshall. A Variations class for Majors students will be taught by RWB Company dancer, Yayoi Ban.

Students wishing to register for the Cecchetti Workshops can do so through the RWB School Office by January 10, 2015.

Cecchetti Ballet Examinations

The RWB School is pleased to be offering ballet exams in the Cecchetti Syllabus for select levels. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 2 ballet classes per week of the same level to be considered for these exams. These decisions are made by the student’s ballet teacher and will be based on their progress, attendance and focus. Invitations will be sent out in the coming weeks. The exams will be in April and in preparation, a maximum of four Sunday exam rehearsals will be scheduled during the months prior. These Sunday exam rehearsals are mandatory and will take precedence over Festival rehearsals.

Upon completion of an examination, the student will receive a certificate and detailed report from the Cecchetti Society of Canada. Please be aware that ballet examinations are NOT mandatory to advance to the next RWB School and Cecchetti level (with the exception of Intermediate and Advanced exams). For more information please speak to your child’s ballet teacher.

Hip Hop Instructor Goes North

Eugene

Have you ever thought that RWB’s Recreational Division classes could reach the Great White North? Well, they did! RWB School RD artistic faculty member Eugene Baffoe traveled to Repulse Bay, Nunavut, to teach four days of workshops to students, ranging in ages 5 to adult, in the local school. Mr. Baffoe flew out of Winnipeg on December 7, and boarded four flights: Winnipeg to Churchill to Rankin Inlet to Coral Harbour to Repulse Bay, returning home on December 12. Mr. Baffoe’s hip hop classes were an opportunity of a lifetime for the children of Repulse Bay. With funding from the government (applied for by the Incorporated Hamlet of Repulse Bay) and support from the RWB School, Repulse Bay was able to pull this unique opportunity together for the children of their community.

Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive

The RWB School would like to extend our thanks to all those RD students and parents who donated non-perishable food items to this year’s Winnipeg Harvest Food drive. These items will surely help many Winnipeg families in need this holiday season. Congratulations to Ava Sigurdson who won the draw for a pair of Nutcracker tickets. We hope you enjoyed the show!

WSO Concerts for Kids – Manny Tuba goes to the circus

The WSO Concerts for Kids returns on January 18 with Manny Tuba goes to the circus. Popular children’s entertainer (and RWB School artistic faculty member) Mr. Mark is the ringmaster, as Manny Tuba discovers the skills and thrills of clowns, jugglers and animals that bring the circus to life. It’s a wild and musical adventure for the brassy mascot! The show takes place at 2pm, with pre-show activities beginning at 1pm. Tickets start at $12 and are available through the WSO Box Office at 204.949.3999, wso.ca or through ticketmaster.ca.

Sharing Dance in The Play Exchange

You can help get 1 million children active through dancing by supporting the National Ballet School’s Sharing Dance in The Play Exchange. The Play Exchange began as a call for ideas to make Canadians healthier and more active, and Sharing Dance encourages groups across Canada to learn a dance routine, rehearse it together and share a performance in their local community. The goal is to see over one million children dancing and by 2017, to see sharing Dance delivered as a pan-Canadian initiative. You can vote for the National Ballet’s Sharing Dance to win a prize of up to $1-million from the Government of Canada to further encourage active living amongst Canadians. Take part and vote by tuning into CBC on January 9, 2015.
