MAY 2014 RECREATIONAL DIVISION NEWSLETTER
RWB STUDENT GEARS UP FOR 2014 MANITOBA PROVINCIAL DANCE FESTIVAL
For Megan Fry, 14, competing in the Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival is something she’s become very familiar with.
Megan, a student in the Intensive Training Program, has been dancing in the Recreational Division of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School since the age of 6. The 2014 Festival will mark her fifth year of participation. She will be performing numbers in a variety of genres including jazz, musical theatre and ballet.
The 2013 Festival was a milestone for Megan is it was her first time performing a musical theatre solo, a piece titled I Speak Six Languages. Megan won a Junior Musical Theatre Scholarship for the performance, choreographed by RWB School Artistic Faculty member, Cheyenne Schroeder.
“I really loved doing that piece – it involved a lot of movement and in one verse, I got to speak six languages. While it’s different being on stage by yourself, it’s a lot of fun,” says Megan.
In 2014, Megan will be bringing her best to the Festival once again. She will be participating in a musical theatre solo and duo, as well as jazz solo and a number of group pieces.
“I really love participating in Festival. It’s great to get feedback from adjudicators who have a lot of experience and know a lot about what we’re doing. I also love that it’s another chance to perform, I really enjoy being on stage,” says Megan.
While Megan is spending many more hours in class and rehearsing for Festival –she is at the RWB building seven days a week –her goals for this year’s Festival are the same as each year she’s participated.
“I want to go out there and do my best, and have a good time,” says Megan.
You can see RWB School students in the 2014 Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival May 13-30 at Pantages Playhouse Theatre. For more information visit Dance Manitoba’s website.
