July 2014 Company Spotlight

RWB Artistic Director returns to the stage

The kickoff to Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s 75th season, Ballet in the Park (July 23 - 25), had an exciting addition! RWB Artistic Director André Lewis returned to the stage for the first time in 17 years.

Lewis performed in the Winter scene of James Kudelka’s The Four Seasons, alongside former principal dancers Tara Birtwhistle, Vanessa Lawson and Jaime Vargas – all who have helped shape RWB’s rich history.

Lewis has spent the majority of his career with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, with the 75th anniversary season marking Lewis’s 40th year with the Company (with over 10 years as an accomplished dancer and 19 years as Artistic Director).

As Artistic Director, Lewis’ vision has been to bring new and innovative works to life on stage. He’s commissioned new creations such as Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the cornerstone of the 75th anniversary, Going Home Star – A Story of Truth and Reconciliation.

“Returning to the stage again is a great feeling and it keeps me close to the art form that I love so much," said Lewis.

In addition to The Four Seasons performance, Ballet in the Park 2014 audience members were treated to a stunning performance by the RWB School Professional Division, which featured three excerpts from Swan Lake, and a hip hop performance by the RWB School Recreational Division students.
