RWB REPORTS SURPLUS
(Winnipeg, Manitoba - September 26, 2007) – Today, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Chief Operating Officer Judy Murphy announced a surplus of $296,233 for the 2006/07 fiscal year. Of this surplus, $266,233 has been transferred to the building fund and $30,000 will be retained for future special projects.
During this season, the RWB was identified by the Canada Council as a key institution and was awarded $434,500 in supplemental funding.
“The supplemental funding allows us to invest in increasing our earned revenues and exposing our dancers to a variety of guest teachers” said Judy Murphy. “The RWB is in an excellent position. By bolstering our building fund, we are also now able to begin to address much needed capital repairs.”
Last season, the RWB performed for more than 100,000 people over 75 performances (47 touring performances and 28 Winnipeg shows).
The 67th season was highlighted by the world premiere of Jorden Morris’ Peter Pan. The show was a soaring success which played to 86.07% houses in Winnipeg over the holidays. Manitobans embraced this fresh new home-grown production with 18,600 people catching the production over its ten-performance run at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall, making it the highest grossing show in RWB history.
The company opened its 67th Winnipeg season with Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story and performed Mark Godden’s The Magic Flute in March. The season ended with the Angels Plus! triple bill featuring Godden’s Angels in the Architecture and the North American premiere of Itzik Galili’s Hikarizatto. The RWB toured this season with Dracula to Western Canada and the United States; The Messiah to the Prairies and Atlantic Canada; and A Cinderella Story to Ottawa.
The 68th RWB Winnipeg season opens with the world premiere of Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmen, The Passion. The season opener runs October 17 – 21, 2007 at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall.
