Winnipeg, Manitoba (September 17, 2012) – For the third year in a row, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet is opening its doors to share the magic of dance with the public with Dance Downtown on Sunday, September 30, 2012.

Dance Downtown is RWB’s contribution to the national Culture Days 2012 weekend, a cross-country volunteer initiative to help raise awareness, participation and engagement in arts and culture activities and events in our communities.

This year’s free open house event will bring together professional and non-professional dancers of all styles and backgrounds, and will run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the lobby and courtyards of the RWB Building located at 380 Graham, and across the street in the grand foyer of the Manitoba Hydro Building.

In the Founders Studio at the RWB Building, dancers from the RWB Company will be showcased as well as other professional dance organizations. Meanwhile, students from the RWB School Professional and Recreational Divisions will perform a spirited program inside the Manitoba Hydro Building.

Other dance troupes that have signed on to perform as part of Dance Downtown include Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers, NAfro Dance Productions, Verba Ukrainian Dance Company, Summer Bear Dance Troupe, and choreographer Stephanie Ballard’s Landscape Dancers, who will perform outside on the Manitoba Hydro Building courtyard.

Additionally, Dance Downtown has also brought on the Manitoba Opera featuring soprano Lara Ciekiewicz for a unique performance that will bring more than just the local dance world to this cultural event.

Dance Downtown will also offer up free demonstration classes that will run throughout the afternoon, including free Creative Movement (for ages 3-6 years) and Introductory Ballet (ages 7 and up) classes. Ballet costumes and shoes will be on display for children to try on, and other family-friendly entertainment will includes face painting and interactive storytelling.

The RWB Box Office will be open during the event for those wanting to purchase subscriptions to our exciting 2012/13 Fairy Tale Fantasy Season, which includes tickets to Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin, holiday favourite Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and the smash hit Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet.
