Allison Crowe and Winnipeg duo Keith and Renée to perform live at Pure Ballet
(Winnipeg, MB April 04, 2012) The complex and beautiful songs of Canadian music legend Leonard Cohen will come to life at Pure Ballet, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s final show of the 2011/12 season. Nationally renowned songstress Allison Crowe and Winnipeg’s own Keith and Renée will perform live for the World Premiere of Jorden Morris’s new contemporary ballet, The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen.
Morris, the creator behind Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s smash hits Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet and Peter Pan, will debut his new piece during RWB’s mixed repertoire show, which will run at the Centennial Concert Hall from May 9-13. The Doorway, set to the evocative music of Cohen, is a series of dance vignettes that explore the achingly honest and emotional journey to love and longing. The evening of classical and contemporary ballet also features RWB alumnus Peter Quanz’s Luminous, and audience favourite Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana.
Allison Crowe, a native of Nanaimo, B.C., will be performing Cohen’s 1984 legendary ballad Hallelujah which she recorded on her 2003 CD Tidings. The talented singer has spent half her life performing in music festivals alongside the likes of Queen’s Master of Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, and Britain's Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Crowe also started her own grassroots independent label Rubenesque Records Ltd. on which she has released a series of critically and commercially successful albums.
Cohen’s 1971 hit Bird on a Wire will be performed by Winnipeg singer-songwriting duo Keith and Reneé who are fresh off a Western Canadian tour with Jann Arden. Keith and Renée’s unique musical style has been featured nationally on television, commercials and films, including AT&T, Degrassi: The Next Generation, and Canadian Idol. Most recently, their single Good Year was chosen as the official song of the 2010 Manitoba Homecoming. The duo recently spent two summers in Kenya as ambassadors for the humanitarian organization Free the Children. Inspired by their trip and the people they met, Keith and Renée wrote The One, a song that earned a place on David Suzuki’s prestigious Playlist for the Planet CD compilation.
The Doorway will also feature a pre-recorded cover of Cohen’s 2004 song Sisters of Mercy by American singer-songwriter Cris Williamson, and Cohen’s 2004 song The Letters featuring Jennifer Warnes.
