Winnipeg, Manitoba (April 23, 2012) – Whether contemporary or classical, it’s all just pure ballet. And pure perfection.  Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet brings its 2011/2012 season to a close with Pure Ballet at the Centennial Concert Hall from May 9-13. This virtuosic triple-bill includes Jorden Morris’s The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen, Peter Quanz’s Luminous and international favourite Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana.

The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen
Beautifully set to the music of Canadian songwriting legend Leonard Cohen, Jorden Morris’s new ballet The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen explores the complexities of relationships across the threshold to love and longing. Initially started as a sketch, Morris expanded the piece into five separate dance vignettes that each tell their own story.

Morris previously choreographed to Cohen’s music in a piece he created for the 31st Annual Genie Awards, titled Dance Me to the End of Love, which was performed by RWB Corps de Ballet member Sophia Lee and former Principal Dancer Jaime Vargas. Morris explains he titled his latest piece The Doorway after a quote of Cohen’s with which he personally identified.

“Cohen says that in his own curious, magical universe (his creative process) is a kind of a doorway. He explains that he can’t really speak too much about it because he can’t quite put his finger on it, except to say that it is a doorway.  He has to open it carefully otherwise what is beyond that isn’t accessible to him and it’s something he takes very seriously,” said Morris. “It’s the same for me as when I choreograph.”

Canadian songstress Allison Crowe will perform Cohen’s Hallelujah live during the show, while local Winnipeg duo Keith & Renée will sing Bird on a Wire.

Internationally-acclaimed choreographer and RWB alumnus Peter Quanz brings his moonlit ballet Luminous to the stage in Winnipeg – a piece that the Financial Times hailed in 2010 as “by far the finest new work commissioned by the Hong Kong Ballet…[in] two decades.”

Playful, intimate and poignant, this gorgeous new work examines relationships at different stages of life through a series of duets that range from adolescent love at first site to the deep emotion of a mature relationship and the connection that lasts even after death.

“I was given a quote from Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient that says ‘we die containing a richness of lovers and tribes.’  Ondaatje believes that the people we have in our lives influence us and change our outlook, change our personality, change our character and develop who we are,” said Quanz. “[For Luminous] I set up a series of duets where each dancer performs with two different people and by doing so they show different qualities of themselves.”

The piece is a perfect follow-up to his acclaimed neo-classical ballet In Tandem that wowed New York audiences at the Guggenheim Museum last season.

Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana
A sensual powerhouse of modern ballet, Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana captures the essence and emotion of Carl Orff’s soaring operatic masterpiece.

Created by Argentinean-born choreographer Mauricio Wainrot, the ballet’s narrative shifts from soft and lyrical to bombastic. From the delicate, tender stirrings of the Cour d’amours to the whirling, explosive intensity of O Fortuna, Wainrot turns every musical phrase into intoxicating movement. The Winnipeg Free Press called this piece “a powerhouse of passion” (2004).

Wainrot has been a guest artist and resident choreographer for ballet companies across the world, and previously choreographed Carmen, The Passion (2007) on the company and brought his ballet The Messiah to RWB in 2005.
