Winnipeg, Manitoba (July 27, 2012) – For the first time in nearly 50 years, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be travelling to Massachusetts next week to participate in the 80th Anniversary of the famed Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival from August 1-5, 2012.
Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival served as the platform for RWB’s launch onto the international scene in 1964, under the direction of the late Artistic Director Emeritus Dr. Arnold Spohr. RWB returns to the festival this year for a rare performance that includes three unique pieces that showcase the diverse repertoire and incredible talent of the Company, including Peter Quanz’s In Tandem, the pas de deux from As Above So Below by acclaimed choreographer Mark Godden, and Carmina Burana by world-renowned artist Mauricio Wainrot.
Founded in 1933 by modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn as a retreat for his company of Men Dancers, Jacob’s Pillow is America’s longest-running dance festival and has been a mecca of dance for eight decades. Nestled in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, “the Pillow” is acclaimed for its rich history, unique and beautiful location and atmosphere, and forward-thinking international programming.
This year’s began on June 16, 2012 and is slated to run through to August 26. The festival will feature acclaimed dance companies from all across the globe including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Israel and the United States.
RWB’s own Principal Dancer Jo-Ann Sundermeier was selected to be the face of the 80th Anniversary of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, appearing as the cover girl for the festival program and serving as the lead image for several of their marketing materials and billboards.
Frequent RWB collaborator and critically-acclaimed choreographer Peter Quanz will also have a large presence at the festival, as the Hong Kong Ballet performed his piece Luminous from July 18-22 and the Company will be dancing one of his works.
