All Classes Full Term September – June
PRE-PRIMARY & PRIMARY BALLET
(AGES 6 & 7, BOYS & GIRLS, Age as of Dec . 31, 2011) | Dress Code
Pre-ballet provides an encouraging and positive atmosphere which allows children to learn technical skills and gain strength and focus. In pre-ballet, children begin to develop the balance, posture, flexibility, strength and discipline required for all dance forms.
BALLET
(AGES 8 – 17, BOYS & GIRLS, Age as of Dec . 31, 2011) | Dress Code
Ballet is a classical art form that explores the strength and beauty of dance. Students develop poise, flexibility, strength, discipline and self-confidence in arange of classes from beginner through advanced levels. Dance and movement elements gained through ballet technique carry over to strengthen jazz and tap technique. Ballet training encourages precision, agility and fluidity of movement.The RWB School follows the Cecchetti method of ballet training to provide a solid understanding of classical technique.
To be considered for the Cecchetti ballet examinations, students must be attending a minimum of two ballet classes of the same level per week, with one being the designated second class.
POINTE
(LEVELS 5A – 8, GIRLS) | Dress Code
A unique and specialized technique, pointe work allows female students to explore this extension of ballet. Pointe work demands a specific physical strength and flexibility in the structure of the student’s foot, as well as overall strength in ballet technique. This class is available to students in Ballet Level 5A or higher by invitation from our teaching staff. Students enrolled in any level of pointe class must take two additional ballet technique classes per week with the RWB School.
JAZZ
(AGES 6 – 17, BOYS & GIRLS, Age as of December 31, 2011) | Dress Code
Jazz is a diverse, powerful and dynamic dance style that improves overall coordination and flexibility. In this fast-paced, challenging and fun environment, students learn technique as well as dance combinations set to classical jazz andcurrent music. New this year – Teen Boys Jazz class!
LYRICAL JAZZ
(LEVELS 5B – 8, BOYS & GIRLS) | Dress Code
Lyrical Jazz is a style of jazz that explores self-expression using ballet, jazz and modern technique. Danced to modern music, this class will focus on smoothmoving techniques that emphasize the lyrics. To register for this class students must be attending a minimum of one jazz class and one ballet class per week.
TAP
(AGES 6 – 17, BOYS & GIRLS, Age as of DEC. 31, 2011) | Dress Code
Tap dancing is one of the most popular and stylish dance forms of all time. It’s a fun way to exercise and terrific for developing coordination, rhythm and concentration. From its beginning in the early 1900s, tap dance has evolved from a basic form of communication to the tap technique we know today. Today’s tap vocabulary has developed from vaudeville, soft shoe, clogging and jazz tap style. New this year – Teen Boys Tap class!
MUSICAL THEATRE
(AGES 8 – 17, BOYS & GIRLS, AGE AS OF DEC. 31, 2011) | Dress Code
Musical theatre introduces students to a combination of theatre skills. Students learn basic acting skills and develop their vocal abilities – both in combination with dance elements. Students round out their performance skills by rehearsing and performing excerpts from musicals. It is strongly recommended that Musical Theatre students register for a jazz and tap class in addition to their musical theatre class.
Spanish
(Ages 13 & Up, Boys & Girls, Age as of Dec . 31, 2011) | Dress Code
This unique art form is full of rhythm and energy. This class will follow an international syllabus that ensures steady progress in all aspects of Spanish dancing including Flamenco, technique, theory and history of the dances.Students will work on port de bras, footwork and different flamenco rhythms and steps with castanets. To register for this class, students must have a minimum of two years consecutive dance experience.
HIP HOP
(Levels 1 – 8, Boys & Girls) | Dress Code
A high energy street dance class designed to challenge students’ versatility. Dancers participate in fitness exercises, hip hop technique and choreography combinations. Throughout the year, the history, influences and various styles of hip hop will be explored from the old school funk to the new school smooth R&B of today. This is a great class to stylistically complement other dance forms in order to better prepare for auditions, conventions and overall performances. To register for this class students must be attending a minimum of one other dance class per week at the RWB School.
MODERN
(Intermediate Modern Ages 12 – 14, Girls & Boys) | Dress Code
(Senior Modern Ages 15 – 17, Girls & Boys Age as of December 31, 2011 with a minimum of 2 years of consecutive dance experience.)
Modern dance is a structured discipline focusing on principles of tension and relaxation, fall and recovery, suspension, contraction and release. Dancers will explore a wide range of movement, increase their flexibility and acquire keen body awareness. These classes will be taught accompanied by a percussionist from the RWB School music staff.
RWB School Dance ENSEMBLE

JAZZ, TAP, MUSICAL THEATRE
The opportunity to perform with the RWB School Dance Ensemble is available for students who have been invited by our teaching staff on the basis of their focus, ability, attitude and commitment during the previous year. Students must show a positive attitude and excellent attendance at all their classes to be re-invited into the Dance Ensemble the following year. Students in the Dance Ensemble represent the RWB School in the Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival and may perform at other various venues. Students who are new to the RWB School are encouraged to speak to their teacher at the beginning of the year if they are interested in being considered for the Dance Ensemble.
