Dear Parents and Students,
October is here and I hope everyone is easing into their fall schedules. Teachers have had the opportunity to assess all of their classes by now and are confident that your children are placed in the appropriate classes. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact our School Office to set up an appointment with your child’s teacher. Teachers are most willing to discuss any questions you may have, but are not able to use the 5 minutes between classes.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Dance Downtown on September 29! There was so much energy between the RWB and Manitoba Hydro buildings, it was a wonderful way to celebrate Culture Days. Thank you to all Recreational Division students and parents who performed or volunteered.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year of dance! Thank you again for your support.

The Manitoba Hydro Satellite Programs are an extension of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School’s Recreational Division and offer dance programming to students in rural Manitoba. This year we are running dance programs in Altona (taught by Alex Schade), Gimli (taught by Lisa Brooks), St.Malo (taught by Stacha Penner and Jessica Spirito) and Eriksdale (taught by Samantha Hrabi and Stacha Penner). The RWB School Recreational Division would like to extend a huge thank you to Manitoba Hydro for their continued support of this program and to the volunteer coordinators in each community who donate countless hours to ensure these programs run successfully.
The RWB is a large building and has several exits. It is important that the students familiarize themselves with the nearest exits in case of a fire or other emergency. The School will beconducting random fire drills over the next month to ensure that students become comfortable with these exit procedures. Although we will be conducting several drills it is impossible to ensure that all students will be present for them. Teachers will be explaining safety procedures to all of their classes. During these drills ALL students, parents and staff are to participate in the safety procedures. Staff will be providing direction throughout the building. Parents are NOT to remove their children from the class at the sound of the alarm, however may accompany their child’s class to the holding area. This is crucial to ensure that teachers are able to know where all students are at all times. In the event of an actual fire during inclement weather, the RWB Residence building is the holding area for students. Staff will direct students there, accordingly.
This year, Hallowe’en falls on a Thursday. Students are welcome to wear their costumes to class to celebrate the event. This being said, we ask that parents ensure costumes do not restrict movement and allow your child to dance without hurting others. Props and masks will not beallowed in class.
Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood
Artistic Director André Lewis has commissioned a bold adaptation of Canadian author Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel of the same name. Acclaimed New York-based choreographer Lila York hast created a powerful and poignant interpretation of the gripping tale.
Also, when you join us on opening night there will be a special pre-show chat between Margaret Atwood and Artistic Director André Lewis that you won’t want to miss!

Students are not permitted to be on the 4th floor at any time. Students whose classes are scheduled on the 4th floor should remain in the Atrium (2nd floor) until 5 minutes before their class begins at which time they should take the stairs to the 4th floor. At the end of their classes they are to make their way to the atrium. Due to privacy protection regulations, parents are not permitted to take pictures or video any portion of their child’s class. Parents are welcome to take pictures of their children in the studio by themselves or with the teacher AFTER the class. Parents are asked to refrain from observing classes on the 2nd floor from the 3rd floor balcony. This can be distracting for the students and teacher. Many of the studios have small windows on the doors for parents to catch a brief look; however that too can be distracting for prolonged periods of time. We invite you to come right into the studio in November for our Fall Parent Observation class. We will be happy to show you everything your children are doing! The tables in the Atrium are available for students to complete their school work and provide a clean environment to eat their meals while waiting for classes. Students and parents are encouraged to share the space appropriately, if you are not using the table please allow others to use it.
The Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival offers a category referred to as “student initiated choreography”. This category allows students to choreograph their own dances as well as choose their own performers and costuming. Adjudication is based purely on the structure of the choreography and interpretation by the choreographer. The festival itself takes place in mid May at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, applications and more information will be available from the School Office on October 15.
A limited number of applications will be accepted. Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis.
