How to Attend

What is suitable attire for the ballet?
Suitable attire for the ballet is anything that falls within the realm of casual to formal. An unwritten dress code applies to casual attire, in that it is best that the clothes be tidy in appearance.

Is it appropriate for me to bring my child along?
It is certainly appropriate to bring your child to the ballet, keeping mind that some ballets are more appropriate for children than others, such as Nutcracker, a perennial children’s favourite. In general, it is advised that ballet is best for children 5 years and up, who are able to sit through an extended evening of entertainment. Babes in arms are not permitted.

Where can I find parking?
Underground parking is located at the Civic Parkade at Princess Street near James Avenue, west of the Concert Hall. It is limited, however, so it is advised that patrons arrive early to secure parking there. There is also street parking in the area as well as paid surface lots. Depending on other events taking place in the area, parking can be limited, so it is best to plan ahead.

What happens if I arrive late?
Seating for latecomers is at the discretion of Concert Hall management. As it may be disruptive to audience members when others arrive late, it is advised that those attending the ballet arrange for ample time to travel, park and seat themselves before the performance.

Where is the performance being held?
All season repertoire is performed at the Concert Hall at 555 Main Street. Open rehearsals and other performances may be found at the RWB building at 380 Graham Avenue. Please call the RWB Subscriber Services Office for information on performances and their location at 956–2792.

When is the performance over?
The running time for a performance varies, Swan Lake's running time is 2 hours and 19 minutes.

HELPFUL AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE - Golden Rules

  1. Please refrain from use of eau de colognes; many people are allergic to perfume.
  2. Feel free to bring your child, but be certain to make etiquette a part of their experience. Keep in mind that some ballets are more appropriate than others for a child's first experience with the ballet (e.g. Nutcracker)
  3. Unwrap your candies and cough drops before the concert begins.
  4. Be certain that pagers, watch alarms and cell phones are turned off.
  5. The overture is part of the performance, so please stop talking at this point.
  6. Note: When couples lean their heads together, they block the view of the person behind them. Leaning forward also blocks the view.
  7. Please refrain from talking, whispering, or humming and singing along.
  8. Wait for a pause or intermission before searching through a purse or backpack.
  9. While the parking garage may get busy and public transit is difficult, leaving while the show is in progress in order to beat the traffic is discourteous.
  10. No cameras or recording devices are permitted.
  11. The old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
