Celebrated Argentinean/Canadian choreographer Mauricio Wainrot takes on opera's female powerhouse in his first original creation for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Sultry, seductive Carmen destroys men at a glance – until she meets her match in love-smitten Don José. From the creator of Carmina Burana and The Messiah, Carmen, The Passion is Wainrot’s latest masterwork and is set to a commissioned score by Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum. Wainrot's exploration of the tempestuous side of fiction’s most uninhibited gypsy temptress promises to be powerful and moving.
“As an ensemble, the RWB is looking very strong and tossed off Wainrot’s very physical choreography with panache.”
– The Globe and Mail, 2006
“A feast for the senses...high drama, startling symmetry and ecstatic, shimmering, unadorned dance”
– Winnipeg Free Press, 2004

Lighting Design : PIERRE LAVOIE
Sound Design : JEAN-PIERRE COTE
Length : 2 hours, 25 minutes
Fun. Cheeky. Outrageous. Not exactly what you’d expect from an adaptation of Mozart’s most famous opera. The Magic Flute has delighted audiences across Canada and the U.S. and now returns to Winnipeg for five encore performances.
Don’t miss Godden’s witty, hip 21st century interpretation of Mozart’s classic opera.
“This Magic Flute fits the RWB like a glove. It’s the kind of wacky, witty juxtaposition Mozart would have loved.”
– Vancouver Sun
“High drama, slapstick comedy, the quest for spiritual enlightenment and wholesome earthly desire.”
– Dance International
