History

A foundation for excellence.

Founded in 1970 by celebrated teacher and former Royal Winnipeg Ballet Principal Dancer David Moroni, C.M., Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division is internationally recognized as a centre for dance excellence and as a National Training Institute by the Government of Canada, funded by Canadian Heritage. We also enjoy support from the Province of Manitoba through the Manitoba Arts Council.

Mr. Moroni is one of the few pedagogues to have trained and been mentored by both Nesta Toumine, charter member and examiner of the Society of Russian Ballet and Vera Volkova, the world-class teacher and pupil of Agrippina Vaganova, who established the Vaganova method of classical ballet training.

Upon his retirement after 34 years as the School’s Director, David Moroni, C.M. appointed then Associate Director Arlene Minkhorst as his successor in 2004. Since then, Ms Minkhorst has carried on the tradition of excellence begun by Mr. Moroni and continues to build upon our reputation as one of themost respected professional ballet schools worldwide.

The RWB School Professional Division has spent over 40 years researching and developing a comprehensive training system for dance students pursuing a professional career. The result is a unique curriculum that develops versatile young artists with a strong technique and the ability to be competitive internationally. The rest is history, as witnessed by the long list of RWB School Alumni, who take pride of place on the world stage.

“One of many dreams for the School is for it to continue its commitment in nurturing a broad cluster of artists. By this I mean the development of future dancers, teachers, choreographers, coaches, directors, superstars, and those drawn toward the production aspects of the ballet such as designer, wardrobe and all technical aspects of the behind-the-scene world of the theatre.” - David Moroni, CM, Professional Division founder
