La Bayadére next on Stage

As part of the 2014/15 Subscription Series, RWB excitedly includes the RWB School Professional Division’s presentation of La Bayadère: Kingdom of the Shades + Misadventures of Pinocchio with choreography by Anna Marie Holmes, inspired by Marius Petipa. Having premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1877, La Bayadère was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century but was almost unknown in the West until 1961, when the touring Kirov Ballet performed the famous Kingdom of the Shades scene. Legendary India provides the setting for a tale of love, murder and vengeful judgement by the gods, set to a lyrical score by Ludwig Minkus.

In conjunction with the RWB’s 75th anniversary, this is an opportunity for the RWB School Professional Division to invite audiences to experience the talent and hard work of our student body firsthand. This dynamic mixed repertoire program features La Bayadère’s most frequently performed sequence, the dream-like Kingdom of the Shades. Audiences are sure to be awestruck when a mesmerizing procession of ballerinas dance in unison across a moonlit stage. Choreographed by Stéphane Léonard, The Misadventures of Pinocchio follows beloved wood carver Geppetto and animated marionette Pinocchio as they face a series of trials and tribulations and learn valuable lessons from their mistakes. With new and classical works set to a brilliant musical backdrop, this performance is a perfect introduction to the world of ballet.

Performances will be from Thursday, May 21 – Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Please click here for more information.

A Few Days Left of The Faerie Queen!

There’s only one performance left of The Faerie Queen. This enchanting story filled with love, magic, and deception, features visually exquisite choreography by John Alleyne in a full-length ballet based on Henry Purcell’s opera of the same name, and on Shakespeare’s magical comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Follow Puck, as the fairy with a penchant for causing chaos, ensnaring both humans and fairies alike in romance and confusion with her magical flower blossom. The Faerie Queen is an exploration of the contrasting elements of fantasy and reality - dark and light, mortal and immortal, male and female - and what happens when these powerful elements collide with one another.

Thank you from RWB’s 75th Diamond Gala

We would like to give a special thank you to all of our supporters, sponsors, staff, and the Gala Committee for all of the hard work and generosity that made the RWB’s 75th Diamond Gala a wonderful event. Without our amazing community, it would not be possible to continue enriching the world with dance. We would like to also acknowledge our Alumni guests in attendance and our dancers for their performances. We strongly believe having performances at our events reconnects us to the joy of dance and reminds us we do the work that we do. Cheers to another 75 years! Please enjoy our 75th video which highlights our journey as a company in the world of ballet.

Vote for RWB’s ExplorAbility program in MTS Future First campaign

As a finalist in the MTS Future First grants selection process, RWB has the opportunity to receive $10,000 towards our ExplorAbility for Youth program. This program truly touches the lives of those with varying cognitive and physical disabilities. Receiving this funding would enable us to develop the program further by establishing a more comprehensive program and to develop awareness of the program.

It would also provide us with the opportunity to offer subsidized tuition to allow the program to be accessible to all candidates. The grant would further enable us to cover costs providing teaching assistants in the classroom and professional development opportunities related to this programming. The community would greatly benefit from having access to this program as it would encourage mobility and health benefits to those who are not able to participate in conventional exercise programs in the city. By continuing to develop the program, the community will benefit from a well developed, option for those with disabilities in Winnipeg.
