Though Margaret Yole had very little experience with dance, taking dance classes more seriously was always something on her “bucket list”. Her first introduction to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was one afternoon as she was riding the bus past the RWB building and saw a smiling young girl enter – it was then she decided to sign up for a jazz class.

“It was right then and there I decided I wanted to dance. I really wanted to do something outside of my job life”, said Margaret, who works for the federal government. “I wanted to do something in the arts and dance seemed like a good fit,” she said.

That was five years ago. Margaret now takes jazz, ballet and modern classes in the Adult Program in the RWB School Recreational Division and she says if she had time to do more, she would.

“I am so thankful for the program. It’s great for people who like to learn and challenge themselves – there are so many varieties and levels to progress to,” Margaret says. “I never thought I could pirouette in my life and now I can.”

Margaret says one of her favourite things about taking part in the RWB School Adult Dance program is the recital, Steppin’ Out. The performance happens each year in the spring and gives the adult students an opportunity to showcase their work.

While her first time on stage was nerve-wracking, Margaret says the experiences she’s had on the Steppin’ Out stage have been opportunities of a lifetime.

“The level of commitment the RWB School puts into the show is amazing. As an adult, there is no place you really have an opportunity to have that kind of experience unless you are a performer,” Margaret said.

Margaret says she recommends the RWB Adult Program to everyone she knows.

“I tell people – if you’ve ever thought about dancing, just try it. There’s people of every age bracket, from 18 to mid-sixties and everyone involved, both students and instructors are amazing. I look forward to spending time with them each week,” Margaret said.

Steppin’ Out 2014 will take place on Saturday, March 1 (7:30 pm) and Sunday March 2 (2pm, 7:30pm) in Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet Founders’ studio (380 Graham Avenue). Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
