WINNIPEG—April 10, 2017. Evelyn Hart and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) bring James Kudelka’s Vespers to life from May 10-14 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Kudelka’s new creation is based on the music of Claudio Monteverdi’s “Vespers”. With the world premiere of Vespers, we will see how Kudelka combines dramatic atmospheres with creative classical ballet technique, contemporary styles and perspectives on relationships, nature and the spiritual world.

“This collaboration between the RWB, Evelyn Hart, and James Kudelka is an unparalleled opportunity,” says André Lewis, RWB’s Executive Artistic Director. “Kudelka’s pieces exemplify the imaginative work being choreographed in contemporary ballet. Vespers is truly a unique experience, one that is sure to leave a lasting impression.”

Collaborating with Kudelka is an esteemed creative team: Denis Lavoie (costume design), Karen Rodd (animal mask design), Michael Mazzola (lighting design), and Nick Blais (set design).

Claudio Monteverdi’s stunning score is performed by Camerata Nova, a Winnipeg-based vocal group, accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Vespers is alive with vibrant character, colour and texture with all the richness of a renaissance painting. This emotionally powerful ballet features iconic ballerina Evelyn Hart in a role created especially for her.

“Vespers is what dance does best,” says Hart. “It will touch you in ways that are unexpected; it is lyrical, mysterious, and evocative without being literal. It gives you a sense of music and movement—it moves me deeply.”
The RWB gratefully acknowledges The Bank of Montreal (BMO) for their sponsorship of Vespers.
