Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s 75th anniversary is shaping up to be an extremely memorable season. We opened the year with Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation, the Company toured China with Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge™ - The Ballet and delighted audiences in Victoria, Nanaimo and Vancouver with Nutcracker and the addition of thirteen new polar bears. Capping off December was RWB’s commemoration as a national historic event of Canada by Parks Canada.

At a special event held on December 23rd, The Honourable Shelly Glover, Canada’s Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced the designation of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a national historic event of Canada, and unveiled a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque to mark the momentous occasion.

“We are extremely honoured to receive this designation, especially as we celebrate our 75th anniversary season,” said Royal Winnipeg Ballet Executive Director, Jeff Herd. “The RWB is proud to represent Canada wherever we perform and this commemoration truly celebrates RWB’s rich history, and our endeavor to contribute to Canadian culture.”

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is commemorated as one of the earliest ballet companies in the country that helped establish ballet as a theatrical dance form in Canada; for its distinctive repertoire in Canadian context that was designed to appeal to a broad selection of Canadian society; and for its extensive national and international tours.

“Known around the world, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is truly a centre of excellence and a cultural leader in Canada,” said Minister Glover. “As we celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, our Government is proud to see the Royal Winnipeg Ballet designated as a national historic event.”
