World renowned prima ballerina Evelyn Hart is returning to Winnipeg from November 21-24 for four shows in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) Founders’ Studio. Created specifically for Hart by famed choreographer and Order of Canada appointee, James Kudelka, Four Old Legs examines the devastating toll that time takes on love.

The duet stars Hart and acclaimed dance artist Zhenya Cerneacov in a moving, hour-long ballet that will leave audiences with a renewed appreciation and deeper understanding of life after youth.
The premise of Four Old Legs stems from Kudelka’s own desire to perform with Hart. He imagined a duet told through a series of vignettes exploring the path of a long-term romance. The score is an eclectic mix of that includes instantly recognizable music from Chopin, Judy Garland, and Talking Heads.

“The latest collaboration between Evelyn Hart and James Kudelka is a breathtaking meditation on lovers growing old together,” says André Lewis, RWB’s Executive Artistic Director. “Kudelka’s choreography comes alive on the stage, and set to a fantastic score, Four Old Legs delivers an incredible performance for everyone.”

Hart became Principal Dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1979, after graduating from the RWB Professional Division Ballet Academic Program three years prior. She was the first Canadian to win gold at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1980, and, in 1983, Hart was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and later was promoted to Companion in 1994. In 2000, Hart was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, and received a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, Canada’s highest honour for the performing arts, in 2001.

In 2005, after three decades of building her reputation as Canada’s premiere ballerina, Hart retired from the RWB. It wasn’t until 2014, nearly a decade later, that Hart would return to Winnipeg, when Kudelka cast her in his critically acclaimed ballet The Four Seasons. Since then, Hart returned to coach RWB company members for the 2015 production of Giselle, one of the greatest ballets of all time and one of her most iconic roles. Hart was also featured in a supportive role in Giselle, and, in 2017, she once again took centre stage, starring in a role created specifically for her, in Kudelka’s renowned original ballet, Vespers.

The RWB gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support of its Funders Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, Winnipeg Arts Council, and Manitoba Sport, Culture, and Heritage. The RWB would like to thank Sara Gray for her generous support in bringing Four Old Legs to the RWB stage.
