Observation Week

Are you wondering what your child has been up to in class? Well, we are really excited to show you! Classes will be open for observation for parents from November 16-22. This period of observation allows you an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and for teachers to share valuable information about the remainder of the year with you.

We ask that all guests remove their outdoor footwear before entering the studios and please turn off all cell phones. Video recording is not permitted and photography is only permitted if you are taking pictures of your own child. These policies are in place for the protection of all students. We also ask that all students choose another week to take make up classes.

RWB School Dance Ensemble

All students involved in the RWB School Dance Ensembles will have received their annual Manitoba Dance Festival participation summary/invoices this month. These invoices will include mandatory group pieces and may include optional pieces. Registration for Dance Conventions and Competitions will also be included in this package.

The deadline for confirmation and payment of your Festival invoice/participation is November 15. Most rehearsals for optional pieces will begin after the New Year, however some may begin as early as the end of November. Payment plans are available for all Dance Manitoba fees, however payments for Competitions are due in full since registrations for these events must be submitted in December.

Student Choreography Opportunity

The Manitoba Provincial Dance Festival offers a category referred to as “student initiated choreography”. This category allows students to choreograph their own dances as well as choose their own performers and costuming. Adjudication is based entirely on the work of the choreographer and not on the interpretation of the dancers. The festival takes place in mid-May at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.

The cost to participate is $143. This fee will include the use of our studios for rehearsals, staff support and supervision at the festival, as well as the festival entry fee. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please pick up further information at the School Office. Please note changes to past guidelines have been implemented for this season.

A limited number of applications will be accepted. Applications will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis and will be accepted until November 15.

Santa Claus Parade

Parents please note that the annual Winnipeg Santa Claus parade will be taking place on November 15 and is scheduled to start at 5 pm. Please be aware that you may experience larger traffic volumes, limited parking and street closures downtown near the RWB Building on this day. We advise that all parents arrange to leave earlier than normal on this date to ensure that your child arrives to classes on time.

For parade map, street closures and parking map details click here.

Call In When Absent

Parents please remember to contact the School Office in advance if your child is not going to be attending a class so they can inform your child’s teacher that he or she will be absent.

Student Injuries

Parents are required to inform Kelly Bale of any injury that restricts or prevents a child’s participation in dance classes. We will then inform the child’s teacher of any adjustments that need to be made for the child throughout the class. If the injury is severe enough that the child is not able to participate in any way, we ask that the child audits the class. If the child is seeking physiotherapy or other treatment it would be helpful if the parent could ask for a detailed description of the injury and any restrictions that are required from the physiotherapist or doctor.

The RWB Physiotherapy department provides students with a clear written description to provide to their teachers of their limitations and how to proceed in their classes between appointments. If parents wish to pick up a copy of this document to use when they seek treatment outside of the RWB, they may do so at the School Office.

If your child is sick, we ask that they stay at home to recover.

RD Boys Company Mentorship Opportunity

The Recreational Division and RWB Company are pleased to be able to offer a mentorship opportunity to our currently registered boys ages 13-18.

On Monday, November 24 from 5-6 pm the RWB Company will open their studio doors to young dancers from our Recreational Division. The students will get to experience a demonstration of the company’s current repertoire, followed by a coaching session with Ballet Master Jaime Vargas and a mentoring session with some of the male professional dancers. The activity ends with a question and answer session.

If your child is interested in participating in this exciting opportunity please contact our RWB School Office to register in advance. Registration is free of charge but space is limited and pre-registration is required by Wednesday, November 19.

Dance Manitoba’s Showcase Weekend

Dance Manitoba will be hosting workshops for dancers of all levels over their Showcase Weekend, November 21-23. The workshops are designed to provide dancers of all levels a weekend of programming where they will take classes, learn choreography, and perform! This year’s workshop includes a contemporary class with Moses Asher Christen, and a choreography class with Kimberley Rampersad where students have an opportunity to learn a Vaudeville inspired piece to perform at the Showcase.

The fee for the weekend workshop is $80.00. Registration forms are available online here.

Dance Manitoba Workshop Series

Dance Manitoba will be hosting a workshop series at The S.P.A.C.E. Cooks Creek Dance Academy in Oakbank. The Dance Workshop Series offers two streams of dance workshops: one for dance teachers and one for dance students. This series, which runs October – December, features classes with RWB teachers Eugene Baffoe and Johanne Gingras. For a complete workshop series schedule or to register click here.

Changes are Afoot

As you will probably have noticed, we are currently undergoing renovations which include a much-awaited facelift in the 2nd floor atrium. These renovations will be running over a period of several months and in multiple phases.

Please exercise caution while in the RWB Building, including ensuring that everyone in your family is wearing proper footwear at all times and avoiding touching or spending time near construction areas and equipment. While we will endeavor to having some seating available on the 2nd floor atrium at all times, we encourage students and parents to spend time in our 1st floor lobby as much as possible. We will have additional chairs and tables set up down there for your convenience.

Thank you for your understanding during this time. We look forward to sharing our fresh new look with you.

ivivva SPOTlight Dance Convention

Ivivva Polo Park has launched their first ever dance convention right here in Winnipeg, which took place on October 18. Eventually, the convention – which is a celebration of dance and not competition based - will be open to the public and offered across the country, but ivivva piloted the project right here in Winnipeg!
