WINNIPEG- May 29, 2017. Peter Quanz, multiple award-winning Canadian choreographer and Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School alumni, showcases his highly-regarded piece, In Tandem, at On the Edge. In Tandem is brought to life alongside seven pieces of repertoire by RWB School Aspirant students from May 31-June 2 at the RWB Founders’ Studio. The RWB School Professional Division’s year-end performance showcases dancers on the verge of being hired into international professional dance companies. Tickets are nearly sold out for the May 31 and June 1 performances; seats are still available for June 2 and include a licensed reception catered by RWB Chef Aastrom.

“A breakthrough work for me artistically, In Tandem, premièred in 2009 at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum, Works & Process series and led to the founding of Q DANCE,” says Quanz, In Tandem choreographer and Q DANCE founder. “The Ballet explored sculpted movement, rich movement textures, and sharpened musicality due to the profound collaboration with six outstanding RWB dancers and the propulsive Steve Reich Pulitzer Prize-winning score. Since its première, the Ballet has been performed across North America, in Israel, and in Russia. It has been a tremendous pleasure to revisit In Tandem for the Aspirant Program. Stéphane Léonard and Vanessa Lawson painstakingly set the choreography and helped the young dancers to learn how to find their places within the challenging music.”

This year’s On the Edge also features choreography by RWB Company Soloist Yosuke Mino, RWB Company Apprentice Philippe LaRouche, RWB Aspirant Erin Atkinson-who recently walked away with several awards from the First Steps Choreography Competition with her piece Look Up. RWB Artistic Faculty member Philippe-Alexandre Jacques will also present a piece called XYears, which was commissioned for David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour and was inspired by the lack of clean air and water for future generations. Jacques recently collaborated on a piece with Dr. Robert Woodgate “A Day in the Life of a Young Person Living with Anxiety” and his choreography can also be found as part of a Canada’s 150th project, Sesqui, which is a 360 degree video filmed across the country.

This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada and the Manitoba Arts Council. The RWB School also gratefully acknowledges the 2017 On the Edge supporting sponsor: Gaynor Minden.
