Jekyll & Hyde
Canadian Premiere!
“The theatrical ride is thrilling from the first moments… [and] takes audience members on a path unlike anything else in a traditional ballet story.”
- Les Roka | The Utah Review (2024) - reviewing Ballet West
Lose yourself in the Canadian premiere of a menacing new story ballet from Val Caniparoli based on the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. An exploration of duality and the interplay of good and evil within oneself unfolds as a fever dream on stage purporting to be the hallucinations of the novella’s real-world author Robert Louis Stevenson. Upstanding doctor Henry Jekyll is tormented by the twisted desires of his alter ego, Edward Hyde, and succumbs to temptation and self-destruction as he unleashes the darkest parts of himself upon London. His reality soon becomes stranger than fiction as his two personas fight for control.
This dramatic depiction of human psychosis is told through Val Caniparoli’s signature choreographic lens and features music from renowned composes Frédéric Chopin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk Górecki, Wojciech Kilar and Henryk Wieniawski. Sets and costumes designed by David Israel Reynoso firmly root the story in Victorian England.
